DIBELS TESTING
Dibels is a short test we give all students in kindergarten. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes each time we give it. We give it to the students at the beginning of the year (BOY), middle of the year (MOY), and end of the year (EOY). Here are some short explanations about each part of the test.
First Sound Fluency:
Letter Naming Fluency:
Phoneme Segmentation:
Nonsense Word Fluency:
TRC:
First Sound Fluency:
- The teacher says a word and the child gives us the first sound they hear at the beginning of each word.
- Example: moon = /m/, sun = /s/, and night =/n/.
- The child has 1 minute to tell as many first sounds they hear.
Letter Naming Fluency:
- The child has 1 minute to tell all the letter names they see on a page.
- Example: A F h i T l m r s b d
Phoneme Segmentation:
- This is done in the middle of the year (MOY).
- The teacher says a word and the child will tell each sound they hear in that word.
- Example: hat = h a t man = m a n happy = h a p e
- We call this Karate chopping words.
- The child has 1 minute to karate chop words given by the teacher.
Nonsense Word Fluency:
- We also give this test in the MOY.
- The child looks at a nonsense word (not a real word) and sounds it out or reads the whole word.
- Example: nud = /n/ /u/ /d/ or they can read the whole word nud.
- The child has 1 minute to read or sound out nonsense words.
TRC:
- This is a reading test we give to see what their reading level is at BOY, MOY and EOY. We will send home information about this throughout the year.
- Students need to be at RB (Reading Behaviors by the first nine weeks)
- Students need to be at a Level B instructional (with a little support) by the 2 nine weeks
- Students need to be at a Level B independent (with no help) by the 3 nine weeks
- Students need to be at a Level C by the end of the year
- Each reading level is complete by answering 3-4 comprehension questions at the end of the story
